The Butterfly is a character from Epcot's Imagination! Pavilion debuting in Journey Into Your Imagination.
Background[]
This butterfly was one of the subjects featured in the Imagination Institute in Epcot. It is shown to be one of the experiments used in the lab to give guests the information of how the illusion effect materializes onto experiments, showing that the butterfly is a test subject.
Appearances[]
Journey Into Your Imagination[]
The butterfly appears in the failed incarnation of the "Journey Into Your Imagination" overlay. It is encountered in the Illusion room where it is seen in a cage as Nigel Channing gave guests info of how illusions work which as the vehicles pass through an empty cage, the butterfly materializes and appears within the cage, providing the illusion effect. The next subject encountered after the butterfly is another illusion effect used on a fish.
Journey Into Imagination With Figment[]
The butterfly from the previous incarnation returned in this latest incarnation of the attraction with Figment being added within the attraction, due to negative reception regarding about his small role in "Journey Into Your Imagination". Unlike in the previous incarnation, the butterfly is encountered in the Sight section where its cage is placed onto top of one of the crates. As the vehicles pass by the butterfly, it suddenly disappears in reverse unlike in the previous incarnation to show guests the illusion effect. Additionally, the squeaking sound effect heard in the cage from the previous incarnation was removed in this incarnation for unknown reasons.
Trivia[]
- A similar effect similar to the butterfly is utilized in the post-2017 Disneyland version of Pirates of the Caribbean used for a caged pirate located at the end of Dead Man's Cove. The robber's utilization of this effect, however, has been criticized due to how visible the mirror is and the perspective on the reflection not working as intended.
