Chief among metal Shields are the Royal Shields, whose Durability and defensive power outshine many others. Before the Great Calamity, these Shields were issued to the immediate guard detail of the Royal Family of Hyrule.[1] They belong to the Royal Gear equipment archetype, a series of Weapons associated with the Royal Family.[2] Though they have an incredibly high defense, Royal Shields are considered collector's items due to their ornamentations.[1]
Being rare, there are only nine Royal Shields scattered across Hyrule Kingdom, with a tenth in Master Mode. Of these, six are held by Enemies. Some Royal Shields with consistent locations include:
- Within a Treasure Chest under Sarjon Bridge in Faron Woods
- Beneath a spiral staircase in Hyrule Castle
The following amiibos have a chance to spawn a Treasure Chest containing a Royal Shield when they are scanned with the amiibo Rune:
- The Legend of Zelda series Series Toon Zelda (The Wind Waker) amiibo
- Breath of the Wild Series Princess Zelda amiibo
A Royal Shield can be obtained as a reward from Selmie for completing the Shield-Surfing Mini-Game with a time less than 1:30.[3] When Link speaks to Selmie with a Royal Shield equipped, she will take note. She points out the one she has hanging up and claims it is the best Shield she has seen for Shield Surfing.[4]
Royal Shields are made of metal, and therefore conduct Electricity and attract Lightning if equipped during a Thunderstorm. They also sink if they are dropped in Water, and will not burn if exposed to Fire or a Scorching Climate. The Magnesis Rune also works on them, allowing Link to pick up and manipulate them.
