Ancient Shields are Shields constructed from the Ancient Technology of the Sheikah.[1] They were designed by Robbie to give the Hylian Champion Link a shield specifically engineered to guard against powerful Guardian lasers. Ancient Shields can only be made at the Akkala Ancient Tech Lab. Once the "Robbie's Research" Side Quest has been completed, the Ancient Oven will sell them to Link for 1,000 Rupees, 10 Ancient Gears, 1 Giant Ancient Core, and 15 Ancient Springs.[2] They belong to the Ancient Soldier Gear equipment archetype.[3]
When raised in defense or mounted in Link's House, its surface emits Ancient Energy. Enhanced functionality allows it to deflect Guardian lasers without the use of a Perfect Guard.[1] However, unlike a Perfect Guard, this automatic deflect function reduces the Shield's Durability. Despite this, Link can still perform a Perfect Guard to manually deflect Guardian lasers.
The base defense strength of Ancient Shields is 70, same as the Royal Guard's Shield, though with superior Durability as well as its automatic laser deflect function. They are also superior to the Guardian Shield++ in both defense strength and Durability. As a result, they effectively render both Guardian Shields++ and Royal Guard's Shields obsolete. However their defense and Durability are inferior to the mighty Hylian Shield. Additionally, while their defense is superior to the Daybreaker and Hero's Shield, both have higher Durability. This shield also boasts 80% less friction while shield surfing, causing it to go much faster than other shields. The only other shields with this mechanic are Shield of the Mind's Eye and Radiant Shield.
Being made from Ancient Technology, Ancient Shields will float if they are dropped in Water. They will not burn when exposed to Fire or a Scorching Climate, nor can they be picked up with the Magnesis Rune. Finally, Ancient Shields are unable to conduct Electricity or attract Lightning during Thunderstorms.
