Introduction to the thermodynamics of solids. (English) Zbl 0744.73011

Applied Mathematics and Mathematical Computation. 1. London etc.: Chapman & Hall. xii, 204 p. (1991).
This very good book presents, in a unitary manner, an introduction to the thermodynamics of solids. The contents of the book consists of ten chapters: 1. Generalities; 2. Constitutive theory of heat transfer for bars and plates; 3. Equilibrium theory of bars; 4. Equilibrium theory of plates; 5. Balloon problems; 6. Biaxial stretch of rubber sheets; 7. Moving discontinuities; 8. Mixture theory; 9. Equilibrium of liquid crystals; 10. Reconsiderations of generalities. The book also contains a bibliography and an index.
The first nine chapters of this book represent lecture notes delivered by the author for graduate students from various departments at the University of Minnesota. The final chapter is devoted to several recent results in thermodynamics. The book gives a detailed account of a number of important results in the thermodynamics of solids. Many examples illustrating the theory are contained in the text. The book is a useful work.
