Will more skills become a burden? The effect of positional ambiguity on player and team performance. (English) Zbl 07712038

Summary: The National Basketball Association is becoming a positionless league. However, very few studies have investigated the phenomenon and its implications for performance at the individual and team levels. This study examines the effects of positional ambiguity (i.e. positional concentration) on player and team performance by analyzing longitudinal data from the NBA via the perspective of role theory. The results show that positional concentration positively impacts player and team performance; and positional concentration of non-star players have a more significant impact on player and team performance than those of star players.
