Summary: G. Gamow’s [“Mass defect curve and nuclear constitution”, Proc. R. Soc. Lond. A 126, No. 803, 632–644 (1930)] simple liquid drop model of an atomic nucleus recently captured the attention of mathematicians and has inspired numerous advances and open questions in geometric and variational analysis.
