Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press (ISBN 978-0-691-14829-8/hbk; 978-1-400-83955-1/ebook). xv, 328 p. (2011).
The book under review is a collection of sixteen interviews with mathematicians. Among them one finds people with various backgrounds, life stories and worldviews. In particular there are interviews with Lars Ahlfors, Mary Cartwright, Dusa McDuff and Atle Selberg who made cutting-edge discoveries, with leading mathematicians Tom Apostol and Jean Taylor, with the first black woman who earned a PhD in mathematics, Fern Hunt, and with some others among whom there is a Beverly Hills dentist, a part-time professional magician as well as a world-renowned expert on the Beatles. There are small introductions (by the editors) to each interview. The book contains also many photographs. It shows in an interesting way various paths to and through mathematics.
