The author first relates some ideas of Grothendieck to some of the recent results on 2-dimensional topology and geometry. Then he illustrates the reconstruction principle and its applications by considering the configuration space of convex \(n\)-sided polygons. He also establishes a general criterion in order to reduce problems concerning all surfaces to the case of level-2 surfaces.
