Nonlinear optimization models in water resource systems. (English) Zbl 1129.90350

Pintér, János D. (ed.), Global optimization. Scientific and engineering case studies. New York, NY: Springer (ISBN 0-387-30408-8/hbk). Nonconvex Optimization and Its Applications 85, 227-242 (2006).
From the text: Three kinds of problems are studied, modeled and solved by different algorithm approaches. The first one is concerned with the WRS planning problem in which shortage control is focused and a nonlinear objective function is adopted. An expansion procedure interacting between primal and dual mathematical optimization models is proposed. This kind of approach is very useful to formulate a trade-off between the dimension of water works, the reliability of the system and the prediction of severity in demand short falls. The second is concerned with WRS management problem in which the vulnerability of the system is considered dealing with water resource shortage risk in planning studies. The third model is concerned with the plan and maintenance optimization problem of pipe-networks for water supply in which new plan, rehabilitation and maintenance are taken into account.
