Summary: A numerical algorithm is developed for solving problems with free boundaries which is based on a variational principle proposed by C. Baiocchi and E. Magenes in [Russ. Math. Surv. 29, No. 2, 51–71 (1974); translation from Usp. Mat. Nauk 29, No. 2(176), 50–69 (1974; Zbl 0294.35026)]. The study is motivated by the problem of liquid filtration through an earth dam.
