Weyl vs. Reichenbach on Lichtgeometrie. (English) Zbl 1116.01011

Kox, A. J. (ed.) et al., The universe of general relativity. Papers based on the presentations at the 6th international conference on the history of general relativity, Amsterdam, The Netherlands, June 26–29, 2002. Boston, MA: Birkhäuser (ISBN 0-8176-4380-X/hbk). Einstein Studies 11, 137-156 (2005).
Starting with H. Reichenbach’s work “Relativitätstheorie und Erkenntnis apriori”, Berlin: Springer (1920; JFM 47.0774.02; JFM 50.0688.04) the author traces the professional relationship of H. Reichenbach and H. Weyl in the 1920s following their publications and their written correspondence. Although Reichenbach and Weyl had different philosophical orientations, in particular concerning their views on the physical foundations of Minkowski geometry, their relationship seems to have been good in the beginning. However, as Rynasiewicz shows, it changes significantly with Weyl’s review of “Axiomatik” (Reichenbach, 1924) and Reichenbach’s response to it.
Many original quotes and a short description of the Möbius transformation in \(R^4\) provided by the author help the reader to understand the problem which obviously triggered the falling out between the two scientists.
