Least squares orthogonal distance fitting of curves and surfaces in space. (English) Zbl 1067.65019

Lecture Notes in Computer Science 3151. Berlin: Springer (ISBN 3-540-23966-9/pbk). xx, 125 p. (2004).
The book describes in details a complete set of best-fit algorithms for general curves and surfaces in space which are used in a current software. In particular it deals with orthogonal distance fitting algorithms for implicit and parametric curves and surfaces in two and three-dimensional spaces. Several algorithmic features are studied: robust and fast convergence, low computing costs, automatic detection of initial parameter values for iterations, estimation of model parameters etc. Application examples of the algorithms are given for object reconstruction.
