A penny-shaped crack in an infinite piezoelectric body under antisymmetric point loads. (English) Zbl 1057.74010

The authors investigate the three-dimensional problem of penny-shaped crack in an infinite piezoelectric body under point forces and point charges placed antisymmetrically on the crack faces. Relying on previous results for symmetric loading, a solution for one-side crack loading is obtained. The reciprocity theorem for piezoelectric media is then used to solve the problem for arbitrary locations of point forces and point charges inside the body. Exact expressions are obtained for normal displacements at the crack faces under different loadings. Some numerical results are produced. The authors reach the conclusion that piezoelectricity attenuates the crack consequences, as compared to purely elastic case with the same elastic material coefficients, whereby piezoelectric components can be protected by a controlled distribution of charges.
