The author considers rate-independent models which are defined via two functionals: the time-dependent energy-storage functional, and the dissipation distance. An abstract framework for finding solutions of the problem is given. It involves time discretization where each incremental problem is a global minimization problem. The first application treats shape-memory alloys, while the second describes the delamination of bodies glued together. The third application treats finite-strain plasticity.
