\(\Gamma\)-limit for the extended Fisher-Kolmogorov equation. (English) Zbl 1001.35010

The authors consider the Lyapunov function of the rescaled extended Fisher-Kolmogorov equation (a fourth-order generalization of the Fisher-Kolmogorov or Allen-Cahn equation). The authors study the \(\Gamma\)-convergence of the functional as the scaling parameter \(\varepsilon\) goes to 0 and prove that the limit is the area functional where the transition energy is given by the one-dimensional kink of the extended Fisher-Kolmogorov equation.
