On the volumetric deformation of reconstituted soils. (English) Zbl 0980.74042

The authors present three models to describe the volumetric hardening behaviour of reconstituted soils. These are an elastic “virgin-yielding” material, a “sub-yielding” “virging-yielding” material, and a material with mixed elastic “sub-yielding” and “virgin-yielding” behaviour. All these models of volumetric deformation hardening are implemented into a modified Cam-Clay soil model. The authors perform a detailed parametric analysis of predictions based on the new models. They investigate the behaviour of ideal soil samples subjected to various stress conditions, such as: isotropic loading and unloading, monotonic shearing, non-uniform cyclic shearing, and uniform cyclic loading. It is found that the first model provides a simple modelling for problems where only “virgin yielding” occurs, and the soil behaviour during reloading is not considered. The second model gives a good description for the soid deformation under a small number of cycles of repeated loading, while the third model is a good practical model for problems involving large number of cycles of repeated loading.
