Combustion. Physical and chemical fundamentals, modeling and simulation, experiments, pollutant formation. Transl. from the German. 3rd ed. (English) Zbl 0976.80005

Berlin: Springer. x, 299 p. (2001).
This book has been written on the base of a series of lectures on combustion problems. The book consists of 18 chapters and includes analyses of general aspects of combustion: experimental investigation, thermodynamics of combustion processes, chemical kineties, laminar and turbulent reacting fluid flows, combustion of liquid and solid fuels, formation of nitric oxides, hydrocarbons and soot. An experimental investigation of flames and modern experimental techniques is discussed in Chapter 2. The other chapters of the book are devoted to analytical and mostly computational simulation of combustion processes.
A survey of thermodynamics, transport phenomena, and chemical kinetics of combustion processes is given in Chapters 4-6. The approaches developed in this book are based on irreversible thermodynamics. Reaction mechanisms and problems of laminar premixed, and non-premixed flames are described in Chapters 7-9. Here the readers will find discussions of radical chain reactions, Zeldovich’s theory of flame propagation and an implicit solution of partial differential equations describing the combustion processes. Chapter 10 describes ignition processes and includes Semenov’s and Frank-Kamenetskij’s analysis of thermal explosions and problems of auto- and induced ignition.
The main part of the book (Chapters 11-14) is devoted to problems of laminar and turbulent reacting fluid flows. A short discussion of combustion of liquid and solid fuels is presented in Chapter 15. Pollutant formations in combustion processes (formation of nitric oxides, hydrocarbons and soot) are examined in Chapters 16-18.
All chapters of the book are provided with special exercises. The bibliography the book contains 372 items.
This book will prove to be useful for combustion engineers and scientists working in the fields of combustion processes and mechanics.
