From the introduction: This chapter is a review of recent work on the Recurrent Variational Approach (RVA) to the Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG). The RVA is a sort of reduced version of the original DMRG, in which one retains a single state as the best candidate for the ground state of the system.
