Author’s abstract: We show that the method described in [the author, J. Geom. Phys. 7, 339-361 (1990; Zbl 0742.58012)] for obtaining new examples of tori in Riemannian manifolds cannot be adapted to produce harmonic and non-holomorphic 2-spheres in flag manifolds. The method in question uses separation of variables and is based on K. Uhlenbeck’s method as described in [Lect. Notes Math. 949, 146-158 (1982; Zbl 0505.58015)].
