Tidal forces and fragmentation of self-gravitating compact objects. (English) Zbl 0941.83506

Summary: The cracking of compact objects, induced by departures from equilibrium, is defined through the Raychaudhuri equation in terms of the absolute time derivative of the expansion. The criterion for the occurrence of cracking is expressed in an integral form, bringing our explicitly the non-local character of this effect. An invariantly stated, necessary condition for the occurrence of cracking is obtained.
