The authors study the integrable problem of three vortices on a plane and on a sphere. The analysis is based on a special reformulation of the problem using the variables which the authors call “internal”. This description offers some advantages over existing representations and allows to establish some analogies between the problem under study and the Euler-Poisson problem in rigid body dynamics. The classification of Poisson structures is carried out.
