Summary: We discuss an application of genetic algorithms to the solution of two optimization problems originating from nonlinear aerodynamics: the transonic solution of full potential equation for compressible fluids obtained by domain decomposition methods, and a reconstruction problem in optimum shape design by using a transonic full potential solver. Numerical experiments illustrate the robustness of genetic algorithms and their promising highly parallel properties on distributed computers.
