Recurrence for semigroup actions and a non-commutative Schur theorem. (English) Zbl 0905.28010

Nerurkar, M. G. (ed.) et al., Topological dynamics and applications. A volume in honor of Robert Ellis. Proceedings of a conference in honor of the retirement of Robert Ellis, Minneapolis, MN, USA, April 5–6, 1995. Providence, RI: American Mathematical Society. Contemp. Math. 215, 205-222 (1998).
Inspired by papers of H. Furstenberg and B. Weiss [J. Anal. Math. 34, 61-85 (1978; Zbl 0425.54023)] and earlier papers like [V. Bergelson, R. McCutcheon and Q. Zhang, Am. J. Math. 119, No. 6, 1173-1211 (1997; Zbl 0886.43002)], the authors consider topological, measure theoretical, and combinatorial aspects of (multiple) recurrence for actions of countable (amenable and free) semigroups, their interplay and the strong connections to the group structure. They do not only prove interesting results but also give a good insight into the subject.
