New penalty functions and optimal control formulation for spacecraft attitude control problems. (English) Zbl 0894.49021
Spacecraft optimal control problems are defined on a manifold and switching between coordinate systems has an impact on computed solutions. Here, the authors introduce an attitude penalty function (a term in the cost) whose values does not depend on the two systems of coordinates given by the modified Rodrigues parameters. A switching formula for the costate corresponding to the attitude variables is derived using a variational approach and the chosen switching between attitude coordinates.
