The existential assumptions of traditional logic. (English) Zbl 0882.03003

The paper discusses the problem of interpreting traditional logic in the light of the problem of the existential loading of categorical statements. It reviews the various suggestions that have been offered concerning this, and tentatively argues that the best solution is to take the non-emptiness of the subjects, predicates, and their complements, of all categorical statements to be a blanket presupposition of the applicability of the system. The consequence of this is that there is no decision procedure for determining when we can apply the logic and when we cannot.
