Nearly pure sorting waves and formation of bedload sheets. (English) Zbl 0877.76020

Different kinds of bedforms (or sandwaves) of a wide variety of spatial scales occur in rivers, estuaries, and coastal areas. Bed materials are found to organize into waves with distinct coarse fronts which are called bedload sheets. This paper deals with the formation of bedload sheets and pure sorting waves which induce spatial variations of the bottom roughness. Consequently, changes in the fluid motions exert a spatially varying stress on the bed. The authors make an interesting study of bedload transport of a sediment mixture composed of two size fractions – one in the sand range, and the other in the gravel range. This study includes the inherent instability of the fluid flow and sediment transport in a straight channel to infinitesimal bottom perturbations. A comparison between the theory and observations is made, and numerical studies of the problem are presented.
