Computer architecture. A quantitative approach. 2nd ed. (English) Zbl 0844.68003

San Francisco, CA: Morgan Kaufmann Publ. xxiii, 760 p., Appendix (1996).
The second edition of this well-known and famous book is not merely an updated reprint of the first edition (1991; Zbl 0752.68014), but actually a whole new book. The order-of-magnitude changes in computer technology having lead to numerous innovations in instruction set and system architecture with parallelism being the driving force, had to be incorporated in the book. The chapters cover Fundamentals of Computer Design, Instruction Set Principles, Basic and Advanced Pieplining, Memory-Hierarchies, Storage Systems, Interconnection Networks, and Multiprocessors, with five Appendices dealing with Computer Arithmetic, Vector Processors, RISC Architectures, The Intel 80x86, and Coherence Protocols. The quantitative approach reflects in numerous analytic and statistical considerations on almost all aspects of computer architecture. The authors have succeeded in maintaining the high standard of the first edition, thus making their book again the standard work in computer architecture.
