Summary: The determination of the optimum nozzle shape for a water cannon intended to accelerate a preaccelerated fluid is examined. The flow is described in a quasi-one-dimensional approximation, allowance being made for the compressibility of water. The optimality criterion is a functional which depends on the flow parameters. Analysis of the first variation of the functional shows that the admissible changes to the control function must be restricted if the maximum of the functional is to be determined. A numerical algorithm for solving the problem is described. The results of calculations are analysed.
