The problem considered is that of the choice of basis functions in a boundary element method on a curve in the plane when the solution of the original problem has a square-root singularity on this curve. It is shown that one may account for the singularity by the introduction of a quadratic scaling transformation. The case treated here is that of a singular point located in a nearby element.
