A unified discussion of the determinancy for phase transitions is carried out. In particular, the author treats the processes permitted by the conservation laws but excluded due to dissipation and nonlocality. Two types of discontinuous solutions, which occur naturally in a quasilinear hyperbolic or mixed type system of conservation laws are considered: shocks, supersonic with respect to particles ahead of it, and subsonic kinks. An extended model of continuum capable of describing “thick” interface and incorporating a weak form of nonlocality with different dissipative mechanisms is presented.
