Locking in finite-element approximations to long thin extensible beams. (English) Zbl 0789.73074

Summary: Finite-element approximations to a linearized model of the extensible beam problem are examined. For long thin beams, the model may be viewed as a fourth-order singular perturbation problem. If the mesh size in the finite-element method is not taken to be fine enough, the numerical solution may exhibit locking; we explore the cause of this phenomenon and a possible correction.
