English translation of the 3rd Russian edition (1988; Zbl 0662.46001) of the famous book, which has appeared in 1950 and is translated into many languages [for a review of the first English edition (1963) see Zbl 0123.09003].
This new edition contains as an appendix a reprint of the pioneering author’s paper “Méthode nouvelle à résoudre le problème de Cauchy pour les équations linéaires hyperboliques normales” [Mat. Sb., n. Ser. 1, 39–71 (1936; Zbl 0014.05902)] as well as 14 pages of comments on that paper written by V. P. Palamodov.
