This is a report on some preparatory studies to a reaction-diffusion system arising from climate modeling. Recently P. G. Schmidt and the author [Nonlinear Anal. Theory Methods Appl. 14, No.11, 915-926 (1990; Zbl 0709.35055)]; J. Math. Anal. Appl. 160, No.1, 250-262 (1991) and Int. Ser. Numer. Math. 97, 171-175 (1991)] have dealt with an extended version of this system establishing the existence of a global attractor and a criterion for the S-shapedness of the principal branch of stationary solutions.
