Empirical characteristics of environmental processes. (English) Zbl 0685.73047

This ART1 Report is concerned with analytical description of some special characteristics of loading processes appearing in strength and reliability calculations.
The correlation coefficient r between local maxima and subsequent local minima, and the “irregularity coefficient” \(\nu\), (the fraction of mean zero crossing rate with respect to the mean maxima rate) are introduced as two simple and yet useful characteristics of the processes. For the stationary normal process there are some analysis of the relations between the two, and the effect of small deviations from the assumptions is also discussed. There are some comparisons between the analytic treatment and experimental data.
