A novel method for solving the inverse scattering problem for time- harmonic acoustic waves in the resonance region. (English) Zbl 0588.76140

The inverse scattering problem considered in this paper is to determine the shape of an obstacle from a knowledge of the time-harmonic incident field and the phase and amplitude of the far field pattern of the scattered wave. A method is given which is based on determining the first eigenfunction of the unknown obstacle and which, in addition, avoids the use of integral equations. Numerical examples are given showing that the proposed method is both accurate and simple to use.
