The Darwinian theory of biological evolution explains the diversity of all living organisms; this theory says that existing organisms have evolved as a result of natural selection from earlier existing organisms. However, there is no similar theory which explains cultural history.
The purpose of this essay is to discuss how such a cultural theory could be developed. More specifically, I present a theory for cultural evolution that is analogous to the Darwinian theory of biological evolution; in doing so I necessarily have to link biological and cultural evolution into a unified framework.
