The continuous spectrum in differentially rotating perfect fluids. I. A model with an analytic solution. (English) Zbl 0564.76104

The first known analytic solution for the perturbations of a differentially rotating perfect fluid system is derived. This analytic solution is then used to facilitate a discussion of the continuous spectrum of eigenfrequencies which occurs in such systems. The temporal behaviour represented by the continuum is exhibited, and it is demonstrated how the ’eigenfunctions’ of the continuum can represent a physical perturbation, even though they are singular in form.
