We consider the solution of contact problems involving large deformations of the contacting bodies and sticking or sliding on the contacting surfaces. A finite element solution procedure is described and the results of some numerical studies are presented. The objective in this presentation is to give further insight into the solution procedure already presented in an earlier paper [the authors, A solution method for planar and axisymmetric contact problems (to appear)]
