[edit]From Middle High German zīt, from Old High German zīt, from Proto-Germanic *tīdiz, from Proto-Indo-European *déh₂itis (“time, period”), from *deh₂y- (“divide”).
Cognate with Low German Tiet, Tied, Dutch tijd, English tide, Danish tid, Norwegian tid, Swedish tid. Also cognate, more distantly, with English time.
