Template:sense/documentation
This template is used to specify a sense qualifier (a gloss) for a usage note, synonym, antonym or other -onym. Consider using one of the templates {{syn}}
, {{ant}}
, {{hypo}}
etc. instead, which are placed directly under the appropriate sense and thus make indicating the sense unnecessary.
Do not use {{sense}}
in the following cases:
- To provide a context for a definition, use
{{label}}
instead. - To qualify a list item with something other than a sense gloss (e.g. to qualify a synonym with a region or register), use
{{qualifier}}
instead. - To format glosses in definitions of non-English words, use
{{gloss}}
instead.
Example
[edit]===Synonyms=== * {{s|an oath or affirmation}} {{l|en|promise}}, {{l|en|vow}}, {{l|en|word}} {{qualifier|informal}}
Customization

Some readers, however, prefer special treatment for sense glosses and other qualifiers:

- (Sense gloss like this, mostly italic): synonym, synonym, synonym (qualifier)
- (Sense gloss like this, all italic): synonym, synonym, synonym (qualifier)
- Sense gloss like this, small-caps, no parentheses: synonym, synonym, synonym qualifier
- (Sense gloss like this, small): synonym, synonym, synonym (qualifier)
Readers can customize the styles using WT:PREFS or by editing their personal CSS files (e.g. Special:Mypage/monobook.css), as described in WT:CUSTOM.
