Notability tag
[edit]I noticed the following edit, which has since been undone. Yet I don't see any discussion on the talk page of why this was not notable... I am going to clarify with User:Undead warrior as to why he felt that the non-notability tag was necessary on this article. - Tbsdy lives (talk) 09:01, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
- It is not notable for the following reasons: 1.) There are no sources to confirm it's existece in the first place so it fails WP:RS. 2.) The lack of sources also makes it fail WP:N. 3.) The article, as it stands, is nothing important. It's just a house. If anything, it should be merged to the main article about Ian Fleming. Now, I do notice that sources have been added, so the remember when the tag was placed. Undeath (talk) 17:23, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
- The proper tag for an article without proper sources is {{unref}}. Even so, what stuns me most is not that anybody would question the notability of an unreferenced stub but that the James Bond wikiproject allowed this article to sit as an unreferenced stub for so long. I added a few refs and expanded it a bit just to keep it off the radar folks looking for unreferenced stubs but given the amount of ink dedicated to this estate (it's more than just a house) over the decades it could be a Good Article with some concentrated effort. - Dravecky (talk) 04:19, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
Proposed merge: Goldeneye Hotel and Resort to Goldeneye (estate)
[edit]Goldeneye Hotel and Resort reads like an advertisement for the resort. It could reasonably be pruned to a third of its size and merged into a new section in this article. Any objections? -Arb. (talk) 20:15, 25 November 2012 (UTC)
I agree that it should be merged. K9ine (talk) 22:27, 3 January 2014 (UTC)
I'm not so concerned with the merge, as I am with the historical accuracy of who has stayed as a guest of Ian Flemming, and who has stayed as a paying guest of the "resort". Errol Flynn was obviosly an honored guest of Ian Flemming; Sting presumably paid for the privelidge of staying there. Thoughts? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.198.64.121 (talk) 07:24, 21 February 2014 (UTC)
The contents of the Goldeneye Hotel and Resort page were merged into Goldeneye (estate) on 6 July 2016. For the contribution history and old versions of the redirected page, please see its history; for the discussion at that location, see its talk page. |
Ultimate origin of the name?
[edit]I'm surprised that nobody has drawn the connection between the estate and the sea duck known as the "goldeneye." By all accounts, Fleming was an avid birdwatcher, and borrowed the name "James Bond" from the ornithologist of the same name. Bond was the author of Birds of the West Indies, a book that Fleming owned and read while living in Jamaica. Of course the goldeneye isn't actually a native of Jamaica or described in Birds of the West Indies (at least not in recent editions), but both Bond and Fleming would have been familiar with the fact that there was a sea duck of that name. As Fleming devoted much of his time in Jamaica to birdwatching, I don't think there's much chance that he was unaware that the name referred to a type of sea duck.
Obviously Fleming's earlier participation in Operation Goldeneye must have been in his mind as well. As a secret plan to sabotage Axis military operations, it fits well with the vein of Fleming's later writing. But it was Fleming himself who formed and presumably named the plan, which suggests that he may have drawn his inspiration, once more, from the world of birds, in which case the duck is still the ultimate source for the name of his Jamaican estate. Property seen in new show
[edit]The Goldeneye property is seen in the new Amazon Prime show - "007: Road to a Million", but I don't have a source handy for it at the moment, so maybe someone can add it. 137.188.108.204 (talk) 21:58, 6 December 2023 (UTC)
