Tasks
[edit]- Improve costume (Q9053464).
- Work on high-level classification of clothing items. These items are all marked as direct <subclass of> clothing (Q11460). Can you refine these classes?
- Example: duffle coat (Q118673) should clearly be a <subclass of> coat (Q152574)
- Improve our proposed showcase items (translate, check for constraints, add properties, improved linked items, add references where needed). See Wikidata showcase item criteria.
- Match costume-related terms from the Getty Art&Architecture Thesaurus to Wikidata entries in the Mix-n-Match tool.
- Match or create items in Europeana Fashion Vocabulary in Mix'n'match 91% matched
- Clean up Instances of clothing. There should be very few items on this list when we're done.
- Individual named garments should be instance of (P31) a subclass: wedding dress of Catherine Middleton (Q599) <instance of> wedding dress (Q170063)
- Types of clothing should be subclass of (P279) clothing (Q11460) or another subclass: robe de style (Q7341111) <subclass of> dress (Q200539)
- Clean up fashion brands and clothing manufacturers.
- Property industry (P452) needs a value which is an industry: clothing industry (Q21643372) (alias fashion industry, garment industry, apparel industry), rather than fashion (Q12684) (part of human culture) or clothing (Q11460) (objects).
- Clean up items for fashion weeks.
- All worldwide fashion weeks should be <subclass of> fashion week (Q253946).
- An individual year's fashion week occurrence (if we had one) would be <instance of> that city's fashion week.
- Add and improve items that are <subclass of> costume component (part of clothing). AAT EFT (see p. 14)
- Add and improve items that are <subclass of> textile component. AAT
Challenges
[edit]Expert help is needed with these:
Sort out anorak (Q1694472) and anorak (Q567688), and make sure Wiki articles are mapped correctly (some cover both).See dicussion below.- Done Differentiate EN descriptions of dress (Q200539) and gown (Q1036729)
- Done Decide how to differentiate coat armor (Q5660520) (ES: cota de armas) and tabard (Q535449) (tabard, ES: tabardo)
- Sort these: guimpe (Q5616421) (en and fr guimpe), wimple (Q373531) (en wimple, de guimpe), Q1521135 (de rise). Likely move de guimpe to Q5616421 and merge de rise with wimple Q373531 but need to check authoritative sources. AAT is not helpful here; they use 300212997 for both. EFV has entirely different terms in German and doesn't distinguish.I think the distinction should be between draped chin veils and fitted neck coverings. (@Jane023: do you have any thoughts on this?) - PKM (talk) 04:37, 2 April 2017 (UTC)
- Yes I noticed that. I think the main thing to keep in mind is that there are certain rules of play here and one of them is not to edit Wikipedia based on Wikidata insights unless you have the AAT backing, so in this case, just pick one and go for it and make sure Commons reflects your choice. Organically over time then the Wikipedia projects will get involved in their own way. of we do what you suggest above, namely "make sure Wiki articles are mapped correctly (some cover both)" we are only going to contribute to the Wiipedia-Wikidata war that is currenly raging (and which you might not even be aware of). Jane023 (talk) 06:37, 2 April 2017 (UTC)
- @Jane023: Oh I am aware of the war, at least peripherally. Thanks for your insights. I'm going to stop trying to make sense of anorak (Q1694472) and anorak (Q567688) - AAT has a clear distinction, but except as Inuit native dress the modern coats themselves sit on a spectrum of similar garments and we probably should not try to determine how speakers of various languages use the terms for everyday garments they see and wear.
- As far as guimpe I'm going to do a bit more digging. EFV's DE equivalents for "wimple" Nonnenschleier, mittelalterliches Kopftuch could match with DE rise or guimpe. Perhaps I'll make rise a subclass of wimple and have done. It's not like the museum community uses the same level of specific terminology that (for example) historical re-enactors do, in either Germany or the UK. - PKM (talk) 19:44, 2 April 2017 (UTC)

[edit]Can you help sort these items, their placement in classes, and their subclasses?
