Resilient food systems are crucial for addressing climate change, by enhancing food security, improving nutrition, and supporting livelihoods while reversing environmental damage. WFP contributes to more resilient food systems through its advocacy and technical support to governments, direct programming, and collaboration with various partners including communities, UN agencies, NGO, the private sector, and academia.

In Sri Lanka, WFP is working closely with the Government, partners and communities to improve food security, nutrition, and resilience to shocks, aligned with national and local development priorities. These fact sheets provide an overview of WFP’s key programmes and priority focus areas under its new Country Strategic Plan 2023-2027.

In this Strategy (2024 – 2030) WFP lays out its vision to reduce malnutrition during humanitarian emergencies; increase the consumption of healthy, nutritious diets among those most at risk of malnutrition; strengthen national nutrition systems and capacities; and influence social norms to support healthy, nutritious diets.

An overview of solutions to avert, minimize and address loss and damage

WFP’s Climate Resilience Investment Pipeline, first launched in December 2023, is the organization’s main vehicle to scale up financial, technical and partnership support to provide immediate climate protection, accelerate adaptation and build long-term resilience for the most food-insecure populations in fragile and conflict-affected situations (FCS). Currently, it covers more than 60 countries with 60 programmes and project concepts. With less than 1% of climate finance currently directed to the FCS contexts for adaptation and resilience-building efforts, the Pipeline aims to mobilize the resources required to assist national governments and local communities to avert, minimize and address losses and damages from more frequent and intense climate extremes, while reducing humanitarian needs and boosting food security by 2030.

This report highlights the essential role of flexible and predictable funding in enabling WFP's timely, life-saving responses to crises – delivering support where and when it was needed most. In a year marked by intensifying global challenges, these contributions empowered WFP to respond swiftly to disasters, conflicts and escalating food insecurity, ensuring vital aid reached those in urgent need.

Flexible and multi-year funding not only prioritized critical interventions but also supported resilience programmes that help communities better withstand future crises. With steadfast partner support, WFP operated in 87 countries, assisting vulnerable populations through immediate hardships and towards lasting stability.
