Biography

  • Hailing from Washington D.C, US, Olubowale Victor Akintimehin (born September 21, 1984), a.k.a Wale, has found legions of fans with his diverse sound and clever wordplay, moving from local sensation to international star through his work with Mark Ronson.

Growing up in suburban Washington D.C, US, Wale (pronounced way-lay) spent his youth playing football, gaining scholarships to attend Robert Morris College and Virginia State University before moving to Bowie State University. However, Wale had already found a love for music, deciding to quit college to pursue a career in music.

Wale made his first recording in 2003, with "Rhyme of the Century," building strong local support for his music and being named in a list of unsigned artists to watch in Source magazine. Three years later, Wale had signed with local label, Studio 43, becoming a big name in the D.C/Maryland/Virginia area after scoring a number of hits. Wale's sampling of 80's Go-Go Disco, with its raw, lo-fi, percussive sound, impressed British DJ Mark Ronson, known for his hugely successful work with the likes of Amy Winehouse, Christina Aguilera and Rhymefest.

The pair soon began working together, after Wale signed to Ronson's record label, Allido, soon after releasing the mixtape, "100 Miles and Running." The release brought Wale fans outside of his local fan base, receiving positive critical acclaim from XXL Magazine and The New York Times. WIth great hype around him, major labels began a bidding war for Wale in 2008, with Interscope eventually securing the artist, beating Epic, Atlantic and Def Jam. His major debut followed shortly after 2011's "Attention Deficit," bolstered by the hit single, "Chain Music." His follow up, "The Gifted," in 2013 brought Wale further attention, with Rhianna featuring on his single, "Bad."

  • I thought you'd never ask!

    Wale...WORST SHOW EVER!

After spending 3 hours waiting for him to come on, my girlfriend and I were tired of standing around and hearing, "Are you ready for Wale!?!" every fifteen minutes!

We got to the show at 9:30 because we were running late and thought we might have missed part of it. We were happy to see that he hadn't come on yet and figured we came just in time. Boy were we wrong.

After waiting another hour and a half, we decided to leave around 11:30 and there was still no sign of him.

It was a complete waste of money and I would never subject anyone else to that pathetic horse doodoo operation him and his managers, roadies, etc. have going on.

    Here's why he sucked:

    1) His opener who looked like a mix between Flavor Flave and Lil' Wayne was alright at first. Him and the other guy reminded me of sounds reminiscent of Jurassic 5. But then...they stopped in the middle of a song to notify us that we weren't feeling the song because it wasn't ratchet enough for us and started a new song. Maybe he meant it in a good way, as in you guys are ghetto grimy girls who think that are all that but YOU'RE NOT...in a good way.

    2) I walked in and saw a sign that looked like something you'd see a person on the side of the freeway holding with a black and white picture of Wale on it saying that there was a $40 meet and greet. I'm sorry but that's desperate. $40?

Any "ratchet" person in the joint could have afforded that. How about you just kick it afterwards for free because we support you? I mean damn, if all you're charging is $40 to meet you, you'd be better off hanging out with everyone. I bet you'd get more in free weed and drinks than $40 could buy you.

    3) You made us wait over three and a half hours to see you...you do realize that 80% of the people I told you about had no idea who you are. I would think that the struggle would still be real for you and you'd still have heart. Who do you think you are? Jay-Z. Wait, obviously not. Hova would never offer $40 meet and greets. And he wouldn't make his fans wait almost four hours either. I've been to his shows.

    Maybe I'm just bitter.

The money I spent to enjoy myself that night wasn't what was upsetting.

The most upsetting thing about it was that I thought you were an awesome artist and that I could relate to your music, turns out you're just a greedy douche bag.

    THE SHOW SUCKED.

  • We live in an age of hip hop where Eminem can sell out Wembley Stadium, and in which Kanye West takes time out of shows to rant about fashion whilst wearing a mask that’s probably worth more than most attendees’ houses, so it’s nice to know that there’s still an intimacy and modesty to live hip hop elsewhere. Enter Wale, who has already had a massively colourful career at the age of twenty-nine; after making his name with the Seinfeld-obsessed Mixtape About Nothing in 2008, he went on to release a criminally-overlooked major label debut, Attention Deficit. Since then, he’s signed to Rick Ross’ Maybach Music Group and begun to tread a more typical hip hop path, which allows him serious flexibility onstage; whilst he’s more than capable of taking care of the raucous side of proceedings - ‘Chain Music’, ‘Bait’ and Lady Gaga collaboration ‘Chillin’ all setlist staples - he finds plenty of time for reflection, too, with the title track from Ambition a key lighters-in-the-air moment. This is stripped-back live hip hop - Wale, a hype man and a DJ - and all the better for it; there’s a rawness to his live energy that his more illustrious peers will find impossible to replicate in cavernous arenas.

  • This was quite possibly the worst show I've ever been to! For one Wale did not show up nor perform and that alone makes me want to request a refund but I don't even know who to go through to do so. Secondly who ever booked talent to fill slots for the show picked horrible artists that no one was feeling. And third for Eric Bellinger to be the headliner, he showed up at 1am performed 4 songs and left. Typically for any show the artist performs for at least an hour, this was not the case. So yeah I'm totally not happy about this experience and want my money back since I can't get the time I wasted back on attending the show.

  • Wale's set was absolutely amazing. Most of the songs performed were rearranged to fit the home of gogo. Wale brought out up and coming artist with him as openers for his show. Artist such as Jungle Fever, Ari Lennox, and Manny Wellz.
