This paper addresses the challenging issue of trajectory tracking for uncertain quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), particularly under the constraints of input saturation and external disturbances. It introduces adaptive laws for managing uncertainties in mass and inertia moments without requiring prior knowledge, ensuring effective control even with varying system parameters. To counteract the effects of input saturation, the study incorporates an auxiliary system designed to compensate for these limitations. Additionally, a disturbance observer (DO) is utilized to manage and mitigate the impact of time-varying external disturbances. The proposed control strategy integrates a sliding mode adaptive control approach with an inner–outer loop structure, enhancing robustness and adaptability. Unmanned aerial spray systems (UASSs) are a commonly used spraying method for plant protection operations. However, their spraying parameters have complex effects on droplet distribution. The large-scale 3D droplet density distribution measurement method is insufficient, especially since the downwash wind is easily affected by the environment. Therefore, there is a need to develop a technique that can quickly visualize 3D droplet distribution. In this study, a laser imaging method was proposed to quickly scan moving droplets in the air, and a test method that can visualize 3D droplet distribution was constructed by using the traveling mode of the machine perpendicular to the scanning plane. The 3D droplet distribution of targeted and conventional UAVs was tested, and the methods for signal processing, noise reduction, and point cloud rebuilding for laser imaging were developed. Compared with the simulation results, laser imaging showed the pattern of droplet distribution from the two UAV structures well. The results showed that the laser imaging based method for detecting 3D droplet distribution is feasible, fast, and environmentally friendly. Full article

The primary focus of research in agricultural unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) pesticide application technology is the investigation of droplet drift and deposition. The influence of the rotor airflow on droplets is particularly significant, making numerical simulations a crucial tool for airflow field analysis. Among existing numerical simulation methods, the Finite Volume Method (FVM) and the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) are commonly used, but there is limited research that compares the two approaches. Therefore, this paper conducts numerical simulations of the rotor airflow of an agricultural UAV using Fluent, representing the FVM, and XFlow, representing the LBM. This research aims to reveal the distribution patterns of airflow field numerical simulations under different theoretical methods, validate them through practical experiments, and select the optimal method for simulating rotor airflow. The ultimate goal is to establish an effective airflow field model to enhance the precision of pesticide application by an agricultural UAV. The results indicate that the lift error calculated by XFlow in this paper is 2.57% smaller than that by Fluent. The wind field of Fluent entered the “stable state” earlier than XFlow, and the speed value of Fluent was smaller than that of XFlow. The difference between the two speed values became larger and larger as the distance from the rotor was longer. Compared with XFlow, Fluent changes more obviously in the core region, and the center region gradually disappears with the distance from the rotor. However, in the velocity field calculated by XFlow, there are still more turbulent flows outside the core region, indicating that the transient calculation method based on the LBM can better show the details of fluid flow than the steady-state calculation method based on the FVM. Through comparison with the actual test data, it is found that the relative error of the velocity value of XFlow at 0.2 m and 0.4 m is small, while that of Fluent at 0 and 0.2 m is small. It shows that XFlow simulation has higher accuracy for external turbulent flow, while Fluent simulation has higher accuracy for steady laminar flow. The research results provide data comparison and a basis for further analysis of the wind field model of the rotor wing of the plant protection UAV, and they lay a foundation for further research on precision application technology. The accurate detection of railway tracks from unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) images is essential for intelligent railway inspection and the development of electronic railway maps. Traditional computer vision algorithms struggle with the complexities of high-precision track extraction due to challenges such as diverse track shapes, varying angles, and complex background information in UAV images. While deep learning neural networks have shown promise in this domain, they still face limitations in precisely extracting track line edges. To address these challenges, this paper introduces an improved NL-LinkNet network, named NL-LinkNet-SSR, designed specifically for railway track detection. The proposed NL-LinkNet-SSR integrates a Sobel edge detection module and a SimAM attention module to enhance the model’s accuracy and robustness. The Sobel edge detection module effectively captures the edge information of track lines, improving the segmentation and extraction of target edges. Meanwhile, the parameter-free SimAM attention module adaptively emphasizes significant features while suppressing irrelevant information, broadening the model’s perceptual field and improving its responsiveness to target areas. Experimental results show that the NL-LinkNet-SSR significantly outperforms the original NL-LinkNet model across multiple key metrics, including a more than 0.022 increase in accuracy, over a 4% improvement in F1-score, and a more than 3.5% rise in mean Intersection over Union (mIoU). These enhancements suggest that the improved NL-LinkNet-SSR offers a more reliable solution for railway track detection, advancing the field of intelligent railway inspection. Full article

UAV-based topographic change detection is widely used in geoscience communities. The change detection involves comparison of two digital elevation models (DEMs) produced by UAV surveys, which are affected by the DEM resolution. Coarse resolution DEMs introduce errors in change detection, but the DEM resolution effect remains poorly understood. Moreover, effective strategies for mitigating the resolution effect have yet to be investigated. This study generated UAV-based DEMs at resolutions ranging from 0.1 m to 10 m with various resampling methods. The impact of DEM resolution on topographic change detection was then evaluated by analyzing the difference of DEM (DoD) and volume budget errors with indices such as mean error (ME), standard deviation (STD), and Moran’s I. The results from two human-altered landscapes showed that the random errors of DoD increase rapidly with the DEM resolution coarsening, while DoD systematic errors (spatial distribution of errors) become stable after 4 m resolution. The volume budget errors also increase with DEM coarsening. Coarser resolution DEMs tend to underestimate the volume budget (gross erosion, gross deposition, and net changes). Moreover, selecting an appropriate method for generating DEM is beneficial in decreasing the errors caused by the resolution effect. Among the seven methods (MAX, MIN, MEAN, BIL, NEAR, NEB, and TIN), the BIL method is optimum for mitigating both DoD and volume errors. The NEAR, NEB, and TIN methods are equivalent, and they are superior to the aggregation methods (MAX, MIN, MEAN). The slope of DoD (SDoD) should be considered when selecting a resolution for change detection. Large errors tend to appear in areas with large SDoD and vice versa. Coarse resolution DEMs are tolerable in areas with low SDoD, while high resolution DEMs are necessary in areas with large SDoD. Full article

In recent years, research on Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) has developed rapidly. Compared to traditional remote-sensing images, UAV images exhibit complex backgrounds, high resolution, and large differences in object scales. Therefore, UAV object detection is an essential yet challenging task. This paper proposes a multi-scale object detection network, namely YOLO-DroneMS (You Only Look Once for Drone Multi-Scale Object), for UAV images. Targeting the pivotal connection between the backbone and neck, the Large Separable Kernel Attention (LSKA) mechanism is adopted with the Spatial Pyramid Pooling Factor (SPPF), where weighted processing of multi-scale feature maps is performed to focus more on features. And Attentional Scale Sequence Fusion DySample (ASF-DySample) is introduced to perform attention scale sequence fusion and dynamic upsampling to conserve resources. Then, the faster cross-stage partial network bottleneck with two convolutions (named C2f) in the backbone is optimized using the Inverted Residual Mobile Block and Dilated Reparam Block (iRMB-DRB), which balances the advantages of dynamic global modeling and static local information fusion. This optimization effectively increases the model’s receptive field, enhancing its capability for downstream tasks. By replacing the original CIoU with WIoUv3, the model prioritizes anchoring boxes of superior quality, dynamically adjusting weights to enhance detection performance for small objects. Experimental findings on the VisDrone2019 dataset demonstrate that at an Intersection over Union (IoU) of 0.5, YOLO-DroneMS achieves a 3.6% increase in mAP@50 compared to the YOLOv8n model. Moreover, YOLO-DroneMS exhibits improved detection speed, increasing the number of frames per second (FPS) from 78.7 to 83.3. The enhanced model supports diverse target scales and achieves high recognition rates, making it well-suited for drone-based object detection tasks, particularly in scenarios involving multiple object clusters. This paper proposed an innovative guidance strategy, denoted as NMPC-IM, which integrates the Insensitive Mechanism (IM) with Nonlinear Model Predictive Control (NMPC) for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) pursuit-evasion scenarios, with the aim of effectively intercepting maneuvering targets with consideration of input constraints while minimizing average energy expenditure. Firstly, the basic principle of IM is proposed, and it is transformed into an additional cost function in NMPC. Secondly, in order to estimate the states of maneuvering target, a fixed-time sliding mode disturbance observer is developed. Thirdly, the UAV’s interception task is formulated into a comprehensive Quadratic Programming (QP) problem, and the NMPC-IM guidance strategy is presented, which is then improved by the adjustment of parameters and determination of maximum input. Finally, numerical simulations are carried out to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, and the simulation results show that the NMPC-IM guidance strategy can decrease average energy expenditure by mitigating the impact of the target’s maneuverability, optimizing the UAV’s trajectory during the interception process. Visual object tracking is widely adopted to unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-related applications, which demand reliable tracking precision and real-time performance. However, UAV trackers are highly susceptible to adversarial attacks, while research on developing effective adversarial defense methods for UAV tracking remains limited. To tackle these challenges, we propose CMDN, a novel pre-processing defense network that effectively purifies adversarial perturbations by reconstructing video frames. This network learns robust visual representations from video frames, guided by meaningful features from both the search region and the template. Comprehensive experiments on three benchmarks demonstrate that CMDN is capable of enhancing a UAV tracker’s adversarial robustness in both adaptive and non-adaptive attack scenarios. In addition, CMDN maintains stable defense effectiveness when transferred to heterogeneous trackers. Real-world tests on the UAV platform also validate its reliable defense effectiveness and real-time performance, with CMDN achieving 27 FPS on NVIDIA Jetson Orin 16 GB (25 W mode). Full article

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can collaborate as teams to accomplish diverse mission objectives, such as target search and tracking. This paper introduces a method that leverages accumulated target-density information over the course of a UAV mission to adapt path-planning rewards, guiding UAVs toward areas with a higher likelihood of target presence. The target density is modeled using a Gaussian process, which is iteratively updated as the UAVs search the environment. Unlike conventional search algorithms that prioritize unexplored regions, this approach incentivizes revisiting target-rich areas. The target-density information is shared across UAVs using decentralized consensus filters, enabling cooperative path selection that balances the exploration of uncertain regions with the exploitation of known high-density areas. The framework presented in this paper provides an adaptive cooperative search method that can quickly develop an understanding of the region’s target-dense areas, helping UAVs refine their search. Through Monte Carlo simulations, we demonstrate this method in both a 2D grid region and road networks, showing up to a 26% improvement in target density estimates. Full article

This research describes a vision-based control strategy that employs deep learning for an aerial manipulation system developed for vegetation sampling in remote, dangerous environments. Vegetation sampling in such places presents considerable technical challenges such as equipment failures and exposure to hazardous elements. Controlling aerial manipulation in unstructured areas such as forests remains a significant challenge because of uncertainty, complex dynamics, and the possibility of collisions. To overcome these issues, we offer a new image-based visual servoing (IBVS) method that uses knowledge distillation to provide robust, accurate, and adaptive control of the aerial vegetation sampler. A convolutional neural network (CNN) from a previous study is used to detect the grasp point, giving critical feedback for the visual servoing process. The suggested method improves the precision of visual servoing for sampling by using a learning-based approach to grip point selection and camera calibration error handling. Simulation results indicate the system can track and sample tree branches with minimum error, demonstrating that it has the potential to improve the safety and efficiency of aerial vegetation sampling. Hybrid systems offer optimal solutions for unmanned aerial platforms, showcasing their technological development in parallel and series configurations and providing alternatives for future aircraft concepts. However, the limited energetic benefit of these configurations is primarily due to their weight, constituting one of the main constraints. Solar PV technology can provide an interesting enhancement to the autonomy of these systems. However, to create efficient propulsion architectures tailored for specific missions, a flexible framework is required. This work presents a methodology to assess hybrid solar-powered UAVs in distributed propulsion configurations through a two-level modeling scheme. The first stage consists of determining operational and design constraints through parametric models that estimate the baseline energetic requirements of flight. The second phase executes a nonlinear optimization algorithm tuned to find optimal propulsion configurations in terms of the degree of hybridization, number of propellers, different wing loadings, and the setup of electric distributed propulsion (eDP) considering fuel consumption as a key metric. The results of the study indicate that solar-hybrid configurations can theoretically achieve fuel savings of up to 80% compared to conventional configurations. This leads to a significant reduction in emissions during long-endurance flights where current battery technology is not yet capable of providing sustained flight. Full article

This paper provides a study of free-flight air traffic behaviour in increasingly constrained airspace environments. Traffic assumes three different free-flight operational constructs with airspace constraints considered as restricted (no-fly) regions. Simulations combine path planning and Monte Carlo techniques to qualitatively analyse emergent traffic behaviour and quantitatively assess spatial–temporal airspace conflict as the airspace constraints vary. Findings indicate that airspace constraints have a much stronger influence on aircraft behaviour than the free-flight operational construct, with any benefits of free flight rapidly diminishing as the airspace becomes more constrained. We conclude that structured traffic route (or network) designs and associated risk modelling approaches should be considered for safe and efficient traffic management of highly constrained and congested (or dense) airspace. This work therefore provides evidence to inform new airspace design and management initiatives, including low-altitude uncrewed traffic. Full article

Navigation spoofing has been widely utilized in unmanned aircraft vehicle (UAV) countermeasures, due to its advantages of covertness, effectiveness, and dynamic trajectory control ability. However, existing research faces two primary challenges. Firstly, sudden changes in the target UAV’s trajectory can result in a significant degradation in the spoofing performance, which may enable the onboard inertial components to detect and identify the ongoing spoofing attempts. Secondly, gradual accumulation of control errors over time degenerates the spoofing effect. To address these problems, we propose a dynamic trajectory spoofing approach for UAVs based on model predictive control (MPC), which progressively steers the UAVs towards the predetermined trajectory of the spoofer. Simulation results demonstrate a substantial enhancement in dynamic trajectory control performance and decrease in accumulation error compared to the existing methods. Full article

UAVs will present significant air traffic in the urban airspace in the future, which brings new challenges to urban air traffic management and control. This paper presents an air route design scheme for multi-rotor UAVs in urban airspace to enable UAV operations at orderly levels. The air routes include legs and intersections, which are the three-dimensional channels of UAV flight. Based on the concept of structured and layered urban airspace, the cylindrical pipeline flight leg is designed, and the operation concept, characteristic parameters and flight procedures of along-road and roundabout intersections are proposed. By defining UAV conflict risk and intersection service level metrics, the operation situation of UAVs is quantitatively evaluated. Taking an urban transportation scenario as a case, the proposed route design scheme is simulated in different scale UAV operating scenarios. The results show that the number of UAVs at the intersection is positively correlated with the conflict probability, the number of crossing routes is negatively correlated with the intersection passing rate, and the UAV arrival rate is positively correlated with the intersection average passing time. The along-road type intersection is suitable for the area with fewer crossing routes and sparse UAVs, while the roundabout type intersection is adapted for the area with more crossing routes and dense UAVs. This research provides a new idea for urban UAV air route design, which is helpful in promoting the standardized management of UAVs and accelerating the integration of UAVs into urban airspace. Drone-assisted radio communication is revolutionizing future wireless networks, including sixth-generation (6G) and beyond, by providing unobstructed, line-of-sight links from air to terrestrial vehicles, enabling robust cellular cehicle-to-everything (C-V2X) communication networks. However, addressing communication latency is imperative, especially when considering autonomous vehicles. In this study, we analyze different types of delay and the factors impacting them in drone-assisted C-V2X networks. We specifically investigate C-V2X Mode 4, where multiple vehicles utilize available transmission windows to communicate the frequently collected sensor data with an embedded drone server. Through a discrete-time Markov model, we assess the medium access control (MAC) layer performance, analyzing the trade-off between data rates and communication latency. Furthermore, we compare the delay between cooperative perception messages (CPMs) and periodically transmitted basic safety messages (BSMs). Our simulation results emphasize the significance of optimizing BSM and CPM transmission intervals to achieve lower average delay as well as utilization of drones’ battery power to serve the maximum number of vehicles in a transmission time interval (TTI). The results also reveal that the average delay heavily depends on the packet arrival rate while the processing delay varies with the drone occupancy and state-transition rates for both BSM and CPM packets. Furthermore, an optimal policy approximates a threshold-based policy in which the threshold depends on the drone utilization and energy availability. Full article

This study proposes a universal (U)-control enhanced with dynamic inversion for a class of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) quadrotor flight tracking operations. In the technique, a robust compensator is integrated with the U-controller to achieve stabilisation at the equilibrium and setpoint tracking in the presence of any unmodelled uncertainties and external disturbances. A series of bench tests of simulated and real experiments on a Parrot Mambo quadrotor are conducted to show the design framework from the academic formulation to Simulink simulation and real flight tests. The structural deformation monitoring of civil infrastructures can be performed using different geomatic techniques: topographic measurements with total stations and levels, TLS (terrestrial laser scanning) acquisitions, and drone-based SfM (structure from motion) photogrammetric surveys, among others, can be applied. In this work, these techniques are used for the floodgate gaps and the rubber joints deformation monitoring of the MOSE system (Modulo Sperimentale Elettromeccanico), the civil infrastructure that protects Venice and its lagoon (Italy) from high waters. Since the floodgates are submerged most of the time and cannot be directly measured and monitored using high-precision data, topographic surveys were performed in accessible underwater tunnels. In this way, after the calculation of the coordinates of some reference points, the coordinates of the floodgate corners were estimated knowing the geometric characteristics of the system. A specific activity required the acquisition of the TLS scans of the stairwells in the shoulder structures of the Treporti barrier because many of the reference points fixed on the structures were lost during the placement of elements on the seabed. They were replaced with new points whose coordinates in the project/as-built reference system were calculated by applying the Procrustean algorithm by means of homologous points. The procedure allowed the estimation of the transformation parameters with maximum residuals of less than 2.5 cm, a value in agreement with the approximation of the real concrete structures built. Using the obtained parameters, the coordinates of the new reference points were calculated in the project reference system. Once the 3D orientation of all caissons in the barrier was reconstructed, the widths of the floodgate gaps were estimated and compared with the designed values and over time. The obtained values were validated in the Treporti barrier using a drone-based SfM photogrammetric survey of the eight raised floodgates, starting from the east shoulder caisson. The comparison between floodgate gaps estimated from topographic and TLS surveys, and those obtained from measurements on the 3D photogrammetric model, provided a maximum difference of 1.6 cm. With the rapid popularity of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), airspace safety is facing tougher challenges, especially for the identification of non-cooperative target UAVs. As a vital approach for non-cooperative target identification, radar signal processing has attracted continuous and extensive attention and research. The constant false alarm rate (CFAR) detector is widely used in most current radar systems. However, the detection performance will sharply deteriorate in complex and dynamical environments. In this paper, a novel truncated statistics- and neural network-based CFAR (TSNN-CFAR) algorithm is developed. Specifically, we adopt a right truncated Rayleigh distribution model combined with the characteristics of pattern recognition using a neural network. In the simulation environments of four different backgrounds, the proposed algorithm does not need guard cells and outperforms the traditional mean level (ML) and ordered statistics (OS) CFAR algorithms. Especially in high-density target and clutter edge environments, since utilizing 19 statistics obtained from the numerical calculation of two reference windows as the input characteristics, the TSNN-CFAR algorithm has the best adaptive decision ability, accurate background clutter modeling, stable false alarm regulation property and superior detection performance. With the rapid advancement of UAV technology and the increasing complexity of tasks, multi-UAV systems face growing challenges in task execution. Traditional task allocation algorithms often perform poorly when dealing with issues such as local optima, slow convergence speed, and low convergence accuracy, making it difficult to meet the demands for efficiency and practicality in real-world applications. To address these problems, this paper focuses on collaborative task allocation technology for multi-UAV. It proposes a collaborative task allocation strategy for multi-UAV in a multi-target environment, which comprehensively considers various complex constraints in practical application scenarios. The strategy utilizes Dubins curves for trajectory planning and constructs a multi-UAV collaborative task allocation model, with targets including the shortest total distance index, the minimum time index, and the trajectory coordination index. Each UAV is set as an artificial dragonfly by modifying the traditional dragonfly algorithm, incorporating differential evolution algorithms and their crossover, mutation, and selection operations to bring UAV swarms closer to the characteristics of biological dragonflies. The modifications can enhance the global scalability of artificial dragonfly swarms (ADSs), including wider search capacity, wider speed range, and more diverse search accuracy. Meanwhile, potential solutions with global convergence properties are stored to better support real-time adjustments to task allocation. The simulation results show that the proposed strategy can generate a conflict-free task execution scheme and plan the trajectory, which has advantages in changing the data scale of the UAV and the target and improves the reliability of the system to a certain extent.
