Weekly Report

I almost DNF Confessions of a Mask, but the second half improved enough to press onwards. Meanwhile I started the different books as my subway book: Bluebeard's First Wife, Winter in the Blood, and The Bitter Glass. Still reading 2666.

Read and really enjoyed this Japanese modern classic years ago. This 1958 edition is a little worse for wear (I think it may have belonged to my husband‘s grandfather), but I love it anyhow. The mask is rather haunting.

Pickpick

My first Mishima - I was doubled over with pity, overcome with a nearly unbearable fervor for his diction, feeling an intense connection with his anguish, and losing my mind at how he had the character ridicule himself. Hilarious and heartbreaking.

#augustphotochallenge #day14 A #uniquefact about me is that I lived in Japan for three years, working as an English teacher. I had a few regular schools and spent every Friday traveling to different schools and doing "one-shot" lessons. I had one school with only two students. To get to another school, I had to take a train, a bus, and a boat. It was soooo much fun and the commutes were great for reading. Best job ever.

Smrloomis Wow, you were a traveling English teacher. I didn't even know that was possible! 8y
AmyS @Smrloomis I don't think there are many jobs like that anymore, unfortunately. When English became compulsory starting in elementary school, most areas got their own English teachers. My job was eliminated my last year there and I switched to a high school. It was not as fun but I still had a lot of time to read. 8y
TheSpinecrackersBookClub Awesome fact! I would love to go work overseas for a few years. 8y
LauraBrook One of my college friends did the same thing in Japan for four years (this is early 2000s), and he loved it as well! Almost made me want to do it too. 😘 8y
