1. I like mystery. I want to figure out the puzzle
2. Serial killers scare the crap outta me so I like to read those but either one works
3. Mo Hyder books are the creepiest I‘ve ever read

🌟🌟
This was a completely generic serial killer read for me. Ive read tons of them and there was nothing about this one that stood out. Extremelly weak. character development. The scariests serial killers are the vile, disgusting people, it‘s the normal boy next door or extremely charming that are scary. This was all over the place shock schlock.

I loved this book, despite it being everything everyone warned about in Litsy reviews: gritty, dark, sadistic, frightening. Also so well written, with terrific characters. I often look up a book to see what other littens think of it, and I wasn‘t surprised to see @Andrew65 , @TrishB and others are fans of Mo‘s work. I looked her up to see if she has any new work forthcoming, and discovered the sad news in the photo.

MittenGirlPeach There is a new book that will be published next year—The Book of Sand, under the pseudonym Theo Clare. (edited) 3y

My #BookSpin list Bingo card! I had to tweak it yesterday because one book was due back at the library and another has holds, so I decided not to add it. But it‘s a good list full of series that are new to me as well as some I‘m deeply invested in already. And some summer-y reads. Gotta read them in the summer!

My current read. On my July AND August Bookspin list, cuz I won‘t be finishing it tonight. It‘s really good and I‘m hooked. But I have such annoyance over men who can‘t extricate themselves from young and clearly useless women. WTF dudes?

We went to our favorite local winery this weekend! Lovely evening.

#20series20days @Andrew65
The jack caffrey series by mo hayder has fluctuated but overall has a great Central troubled character with an interesting back story which gradually emerged and kept me hooked from that very troubling 1st book birdman. The last one was a few years ago and i can't find anything on line about the author writing any new books but hopefully she hasn't abandoned writing great thrillers.

Andrew65 I read and loved this series last year, almost like two different series with the changes of locations part way through. I do hope she writes more! (edited) 4y

Day 5 - #BirdOnTheCover #BloomingBibliophiles
#Birdman #MoHayder

Gritty book. Setting is Millennium Dome Site, Greenwich, England. 5 corpses found & all young woman with no missing persons reported. The sexual serial killer is named Birdman, Hayder has refined her craft & used her imagination. I have found DI Jack Caffery to be very interesting character & look forward to reading more about him in future books. I do recommend this series.

Definitely fits into the gritty crime books field. Overall despite the gritty and dark nature of the books, this was an excellent read. Andrew65 @BookDragonNotWorm If You enjoy these, and not read them, them I‘d recommend the Robert Hunter Series by Chris Carter. 6y
Tove_Reads The first book in the series is always a tough one for me. Either it‘s so good that the rest of the series can‘t keep it up, or then I just have to have faith in it getting better. I really liked the book in general (can‘t say I ‘liked‘ the gruesome details per se), but my problem was that there were too many people. Names were flowing left and right and I kept on forgetting who was whom. 6y

Definitely the darkest and most graphic psychological thriller I‘ve read. I wouldn‘t recommend this to a lot of people. There was a bit of it that I even said yuck out loud. With that I also wouldn‘t say it‘s the fastest paced thriller. It was more of a police procedural to me. I liked it though! I‘d give it a 3🌟

If you like your thrillers layered and moody, give BIRDMAN a try. I first read this British series because Karin Slaughter mentioned it's one of her favorites; it's similarly dark and occasionally gory, but it also places an emphasis on character.

Fair warning: books 1, 2, and 7 are incredible--there are scenes that still haunt me years later. But the others are much less consistent.

[DELETED] 2232195534 I've meant to read this series for a long time. Good to know what you think about it! 8y
ColleenLindsay One of my favorite crime fiction writers. Just amazing. 8y
misswendyd @kaysreadinglife I highly recommend it! It's top-tier crime writing. The police and medical procedural work is so well done, and the character work is unbelievably good. 8y
misswendyd @ColleenLindsay Mine as well. I hope we get another McCaffery book from her soon! I reread these first two books after I posted this. 8y

Pretty interesting so far. A little jerky, maybe a touch formulaic so far. I'm waiting to connect with Jack Caffery, but it has some promise.

Pickpick

This book was highly disturbing but a suspenseful thriller that kept me guessing till the end. I've been watching a lot of Criminal Minds and it really reminded me of the types of crimes they deal with. A good read for fans of gory thriller crime type novels.
