The year was 2014. We had cured cancer. We had beat the common cold. But in doing so we created something new, something terrible that no one could stop. The infection spread, virus blocks taking over bodies and minds with one, unstoppable command: FEED. Now, twenty years after the Rising, Georgia and Shaun Mason are on the trail of the biggest story of their lives-the dark conspiracy behind the infected. The truth will out, even if it kills them. FEED is the electrifying and critically acclaimed novel of a world a half-step from our own---a novel of geeks, zombies, politics and social media.

3.75⭐
⬗ This wasn‘t weighed down with too much zombie gore, which was favorable since I can‘t handle the constant anxiety of dodging zombies— it stresses me out and ruins my experience. I didn't love this book, but I did like it for the most part. The political issues were a bit too much for my taste, but at least they were completely unrelated to what we have today.
⬗ The narration by Paula Christensen & Jesse Bernstein was quite good.

I harp on about this book a lot. But this is my October recommendation nonetheless! 😂

First in a series, but can be read as a standalone. This is a political thriller with Zombies. And it made me cry on a train 🤣 (I also enjoy the names of the groups like the Irwin‘s who go out to poke Zombies!)

I did like this book, but definitely the least out of all of McGuire‘s books.

It has nothing to do with the book, but more that I read it at the beginning of the pandemic! 😂😂😂 Bad idea.

I‘ll try it again at another time!

#SundayFunday Have a great day and remember to tag me!

This is a zombie/political thriller/adventure. Basically a non-stop ride that is definitely more thriller than horror (very little graphic description of deaths). I would love to see this as a show, and this feels even more timely in Covid times. I am taking away a half star as the villain was a bit on the nose. 4.5⭐️

I admit to being a Mira Grant/Seanan McGuire fangirl who is finally getting to this series. This is a well built world with interesting characters. This won‘t be everyone‘s cup of tea considering the last 2 years, but I appreciate the research she puts into her books. I also love her sense of humor - danger seeking bloggers are called Irwins & the MC is named for George Romero.

Book 10🎧

Oooo what a great introduction to this series!🧨
I didn‘t expect the book to be as political as it was, but I enjoyed the journey!

Deadline is next, I wonder who we‘ll meet🎙

It‘s 2040, 20 years after the first outbreak, and it‘s an election year! What news are you following?🩸

OK, here‘s the deal… I read this book at the wrong time. Conspiracy theories? Political upheaval? Government coverups? A virus? Granted it is more of a zombie virus than anything else, but this hits too close to reality, and instead of giving me escapism give me anxiety. Top of that with the ending, I just couldn‘t hang. The writing is really well done. The research is thorough. @TheAromaofBooks for #bookspinbingo

This was looking like a so-so for a good part of the book. As much as l liked the characters, the book is more about politics & journalism than it is about zombies, and I'm not really into that. But that twist got me hook, line, and sinker.

Why does it seem to take forever to get into her books? I‘ve been reading this book off and on for months. It didn‘t really keep my attention until 300 pages in. I had the same complaint about Into the Drowning Deep. The second half makes me want to finish the series but the first half wants me to cut my losses. Anyone else feel this way?

dylanisreading Yep! Still haven't been able to get into Feed after trying at least twice. It took me the first 150 pages or so to really get into Into the Drowning Deep (worth it imho). Have you checked out her novella Rolling in the Deep? 4y
AutumnRLS I have all of these, but have only read the first one. I definitely had trouble getting into it, but once it picked up speed I was hooked. Then I was devastated by the end and couldn't just go right into the next one. I do find myself thinking about the explination of how the outbreak occurred all the time and it's been years since I read it. It's definitely stuck with me and I intend to read the rest some day. 4y
Literary_Siren @Bianca yep! That took a little while to get into as well. I read it before I read Into the Drowning Deep. 4y

another light pick. Grant's take on a zombie book is actually pretty unique, focusing on a future where people have learned to adjust to the outbreaks by way of technology and intense blogging. I do think parts of the book are a bit too mundane/overly focused on the technical sides of things and it clashes with the more intense aspects. still, overall, I did enjoy this book even if it's often rough around the edges.

It‘s time for some horror!

1. Tagged! Pandemic zombies! ?
2. I like werewolf stories, but I‘m also becoming a fan of the horror stories that take the typically good, or at least benign, creatures and make them vicious. Like The Call by Peadar Ó Guilín.
3. Yup! Still tagged, but probably a bad idea. ? Not going to do that again.

Day 11 of #BiblioMAYnia is #RippedYourHeartOut

Despite being a novel with zombies, I have not chosen this as a literal ripping out of the heart. The end of this book had me sobbing, but trying very hard to control myself, as I was in public on a train. I think the caught off guard ones sometimes hit you more!

What more do you want from a pandemic read than a book about the mutation of a virus into an infection that turns people into the undead?

McGuire, as Grant, is pretty good at taking the world we‘re familiar with and adding just enough thrills and terror without swamping everything else in the story.

But I felt this was predictable, especially the villain, and the writing was repetitive. I can tell this is one of her earlier books. 🌕🌕🌕🌑🌑

Back when this whole thing started, Seanan McGuire wrote a few Twitter threads about pandemics b/c more than anything else, that‘s what‘s at the heart of the NEWSFLESH series (despite it being perceived as zombie fiction.) I first read this series in 2013 & have reread it at least half a dozen times since.

After 7yrs of reading on my kindle, I finally ordered hard copies of the trilogy.

4/5⭐ I really enjoy Grant's brand of horror. It does a good job of having gruesome/gritty elements, plus well-written action, without compromising on character or the complexity of layered themes. I adored the sibling relationship between Shaun and Georgia. The story was weirdly predictive of the current political climate with news integrity issues, religious fervor, etc. Also I'm still shaking from that twist near the end.

This is infuriatingly bad, perhaps more so because it came rec by NPR on their list of 100 scariest stories. Really, NPR? 🤔 This reads like self-published dreck by someone who loves predictable thriller movies. The writing, the dialogue, the characters are all painfully uninspired. The most shocking thing about it is the many lines that are finished exactly the way you would expect them to be. The shock being: how could ANYONE publish this?

Ever read a book where you liked the concept but hated every part of the execution? That‘s me with Feed. The idea is interesting enough but I felt like every part of the book was amateur at best. The plot devices were clunky. The writing style aggravated me. It took ages for me to finish this book. I‘m still curious about the rest of the series but I know now to lower my expectations. I feel bad because this is a beloved series but it‘s not for me

"Feed" is a book by Seanan McGuire, writing under the pseudonym Mira Grant. This is a darker book than those she writes under the McGuire name. It's a political thriller with the zombies as a backdrop and not the main storyline. Although an easy read, it scarily mimics todays political and religious climates with the real catch being that it was copyrighted in 2010. Thoroughly recommend.
