Disability Sector Leader and Non-Executive Director, Podcast Reasonable & Necessary, Independent Chair of Every Australian Counts, Member of NDIS Independent Advisory Council, Board Member of InLife
"The (NDIS Support) lists are incoherent, heavy handed, and, worst of all, inconsistent with the purpose of the NDIS and with larger reforms the scheme needs to be sustainable. For the sake of public confidence in the NDIS, there may be good reason to create a shortlist of supports that are illegal or at odds with public expectations about the appropriate use of public funds. But trying to codify all supports that are ‘in’ or ‘out’ is a fruitless exercise. The government should ditch its 17-page list and focus reform efforts on bringing the NDIS back to its original design intent as a world-leading system of self-directed disability support." https://lnkd.in/g_9tMmDH

This conversation is between Devinder Singh, B.Eng, MBA. and Emma Davidson MLA for Murrumbidgee discusses, her diverse background in youth and family services. Davidson's involvement in various government departments dealing with social services and human perspectives is highlighted. The conversation then delves into the language used in the NDIS Review, particularly emphasizing the term "ecosystem of supports." The concern extends beyond the sole responsibility of NDIS, emphasizing the need for different departments to collaborate for a shared deliverable. She notes that various service providers and government departments are deeply immersed in their specific tasks, such as delivering therapy or personal care, and may overlook the broader picture of the individual's needs. This perspective is seen as crucial at both individual and governmental levels. The overarching theme is the necessity for a collective effort to meet support needs within the community, emphasizing the investment in inclusion and people through initiatives like the NDIS. She encourages open conversations to find the most effective ways to meet individuals' support needs while avoiding future problems. I reviewed an article about NDIS overcharging claims. Who would have thought that a system set up to support individuals with disabilities could be open to exploitation from ex-NDIS Participants? Are they prioritizing profit over actual care and concern? This is unacceptable. We can never let the most vulnerable among us be preyed upon. This is not a question about trust and integrity. This is about the right to be treated fairly as a human being. We need transparency and accountability to ensure every dollar is allocated effectively where it matters. We need to fight for reforms & the rights of so many people who rely on this essential support. #NDIS #DisabilitySupport #Accountability #Integrity #ReformNeeded

Only 4 months ago (the day AFTER the NDIS review was released) We were told "NDIS is on track to sustainable" it says so on the NDIA website!! and the data shows this too! stop the propaganda! Only 3 years ago you Mr Bill Shorten were strongly advocating AGAIST almost identical changes being made! as was Mr Bruce Bonyhady! we've got the receipts all of the web, submissions, on your website when you were Shadow Minister (and a bloody good one at that) you have betrayed the disability community and are turning your back on everything you stood for along side us in 2021! We haven't forgotten, and most of us no longer trust you or the NDIA. If the goal was to build trust in the system again you have FAILED miserably. you didn't listen, you didn't hear us, and none of this is to make anything better for People with Disability. I keep getting told "stop complaining and suggest solutions..." We have solutions but you won't allow us to have a voice to tell you, you don't even resolve our direct complaints! And of the 10,000 "submissions" you claimed to consider, but only cherry picked through to fit your predefined agenda... nothing you are changing in this bill is fixing anything we want fixed, nothing reflects the issue we expressed. the strategic legislative approach you've taken shows you've spent the last 18 mths proactively creating work arounds so as to avoid the inevitable pushback you anticipated and to creative ways to repurpose and remarket the already rejected changes and enforce them. centralized decisions, oversight and control for you. reduce autonomy, independence and rights for participants... #ndis #ndisreview #ndisbill https://lnkd.in/g6dTv6uB

Last week, I wrote an open letter to the Honourable Bill Shorten in response to his letter to all NDIS participants from April, where he proudly announced his intention to “tackle illegal overcharging” within the system. The implications of his policies are having real and devastating impacts on participants like Liam (name changed to protect privacy), who has late-stage Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Without explanation, the NDIA revoked Liam’s control of his support workers, leaving him without the 24/7 support he requires to live. Alone in his apartment, Liam suffered a major cardiac incident that required an emergency pacemaker to be implanted. He was barely able to call for help before losing consciousness, and his survival is nothing short of miraculous. Despite extensive documentation and urgent requests, Liam still has not received the 24/7 care he desperately needs. This delay is putting his life at risk and highlights a broader failure to address the critical needs of NDIS participants. Minister Shorten, it is crucial to listen to the voices of those directly affected by your policies and take decisive action to ensure that the NDIS truly fulfills its promise of a better life for all Australians with disabilities. #ndis #ndia #billshorten #occupationaltherapy #disability #disabilityrights #disabilityadvocacy #inclusion #disabilityawareness #ndisreform #australiandisability

What the HELL, people. Who has seen this? https://lnkd.in/g9UsF28B The screenshot below is from the website and talks about the ndis reassessment process. You know, for when we get booted off the scheme. Another upset #NDIS participant this morning. ‘Didn't Bill Shorten have been saying no one will be leaving the NDIS. Then why the hell did they put that wording in it for to confuse those wanting to leave the NDIS system too?’ So has Bill Shorten been lying to us all long?’ It’s a great question. The endless road trip Town Hall meetings aren’t codesign, they’re a concerted effort to talk at participants and allay fears that we are to be screwed yet again without anyone even buying us dinner first. The PACE system is a nightmare, #RoboNDIS is in full swing and I’ve just heard a group of DPOs/DROs have signed non disclosure agreements to help work on legislative changes that may drop next week. I don’t know who they are, I don’t know what they are, but I do know all of this stinks to high heaven. Look at the date on that website. October 2023. But no official response to the #NDISReview, just a series of public events where disabled folk are told how hard we are to be shafted in the prettiest of terms, with endless cups of tea. #NothingAboutUsWithoutUs. This is OUR #NDIS, and we vote. Ask questions. Ring your local Federal member and member of Opposition. Ask about these changes. Tell them your story. We know how to fight. No more "collaborative caring, supportive planning meetings or reviews or friendly check ins." the subtle language changes BILL SHORTEN and NDIA drip feed into the system while decretely moving away from #NDIS as we know it. ITS ALL ABOUT #REASSESSMENTS now, needing to indefinitely "prove" you're impairments meet the eligibility criteria year in and year out. There is a HUGE power shift that everyone is missing, and its going on right under our noses. One only needs to look into the NDIA job vacencies being advertised currently to see the trajectory. When you combine both the #NDISReview (recommendations which are action plans already being implemented, not recommendations) AND the new PACE SYSTEM that was NEVER designed FOR or to make it better for participants and it doesn't benefit participants not in the slightest. It becomes clear to see. The entire plan for the last 5 years has been to centralise control so as to more easily cut cost... the review was predetermined and focused more on advancing pre-established agendas rather than genuinely seeking to improve outcomes for participants. This raises concerns about transparency, accountability, and the extent to which stakeholder input is genuinely considered. Seems it was to dress it up and work out how to re-market their already decided upon agenda (5 years in the making) so as to sell the idea to us again hoping we won't notice it's no better than the #independentassessments 1.0 infact has even more conflicts of interest, risk of bias, and issues than the initial proposed approach. They cherry picked through our submissions to find what aligned with the decided upon agenda. When will the #government understand you can't polish a turd!! WHEN WILL NDIA accept Our treating #health professionals and personal lived experience ARE the experts and should be the ones deciding what supports they need and creating treatment plans. NDIA need only assess BASED OFF OF THAT INFORMATION what aligns with the NDIS framework and to ensure their #support needs are met!!! NDIA want to be the banker, the judge the jury, the decision-makers and NOW the health professionals too. 🙄 give me a bloody break here. Am I the only one seeing this?

My summary of the NDIS changes as of 3rd October for providers: - Changes are coming. - They will require change. - Some changes will last, and others will be temporary. - Information will be provided before Oct 3rd, but not now, even though it is <3 weeks away. There is an opportunity to create a long-term positive impact across the NDIS and disability sector. Rushed changes, ambiguous messaging and fear-mongering are not going to achieve that. NDIA - do better. Reference: https://lnkd.in/gf7Byav8
