This is not the first, nor sadly will it be the last, but in a small jurisdiction like Canberra the impact of this provider withdrawing from NDIS services will be felt profoundly by people with disabilities. National Disability Services has been saying consistently for some time now that the National Disability Insurance Agency pricing for registered providers is inadequate. How much more market failure is needed before there is a realistic look at what it actually costs to deliver services? Providers can’t wait another year, or 2, or 5 for Independent Pricing as recommended by the NDIS Review. We are calling on the NDIA to act this year in their pricing review.
Riotact reports that about 120 NDIS support services participants in Canberra will need to search for a new provider as a leading community services organisation prepares to wind down this part of its operations due to unsustainable financial losses. NDS has been warning of this for some time - urgent action is needed to ensure service providers remain financially viable. Without funding supports between now and the five-year timeline for implementing the NDIS Review there will be substantially fewer good quality providers left to implement any reforms. We wholeheartedly agree Laurie Leigh there is no more time, the delay is going to result in multiple failures at the next pricing release as Boards have said “only for this last year” desperately hoping the pricing errors will be rectified. All sinking funds, futureproofing money and reserves have now been eaten up. It’s brutal expecting change reform and excellence at the same time as bleeding organisations dry. No more time. Pricing must improve this June.
Across the country there are approximately 300 people stuck in hospitals. As a result of changes to quality and safeguarding. These changes have meant in regional areas providers were not able to absorb the increased cost of providing support to people with high and complex needs. This left people with no choice but to go to hospital just to be able to survive. This is not a funding issue it is a policy failure. A failure that has left some people in hospital for almost a year. I am aware of a number of this group who have taken their own lives as they could not see any hope for the future and they could no longer bear the suffering. NDIS needs to get back to focusing on people.
This is concerning. Even more worrisome than this (and the people effected by it), is the lack of action this far on a billions of dollar royal commission with clear actions. And the most worrisome for me is that, lack of action, and letting things go poorly, leaves a perfect time for government to ‘swoop back in’ with whatever solution they so desire and say “take it or leave it because the service landscape is so rubbish that you have no choice but to accept whatever we offer you” (even if it does look like the segregation and congregation we claim we’re trying to get away from)
Tasmania is in same boat. We are struggling due to lack of support, lack of resources and impossible expectations from providers.
Agree! We so appreciate the advocacy of NDS on this important and urgent issue.
Thank you for posting, Laurie Leigh. There are such wide-reaching impacts when an NDIS provider closes. All of the participants whose lives are disrupted or set back, through having to forge new relationships with another provider and support workers.

9moIf they could just create an even playing field and stop bastardising the marketplace. The unique environment means we are often left with picking up the tab for moral liability in the wake of what has been a very poorly managed system.Poor understandings of scopes of practice scope of service and systemic incompetence has meant extra hidden costs. Many plans are charitably funded way beyond their value for this reason. The government has actively promoted staff to go independently without any checks or balances usurping the very integrity of our service. In no other industry would this be tolerated. Where are the ACCC?
